Damage to Your Home or Business

Skunks are found in most urban environments in Canada. The most prevalent species, the striped skunk, is about the size of a cat. They are black with white stripes down its back meeting on the head. Skunks have small heads and eyes, pointed snouts and short legs that make their movements slow and rather cumbersome.  We only use 100% proven skunk removal techniques.

Skunks are burrowing animals that can dig a foot underground. They make their dens under porches, decks, sheds, in wood or rock piles. They are nocturnal (active at night) and feed on plants, insects, small mammals, bird eggs and fallen fruits. They do not hibernate and several females may den together over the winter.

Skunks are rarely aggressive unless cornered or defending their young. If approached or threatened it will emit it’s spray which can reach up to 4 ½ metres. Skunk spray is an extremely potent sulphur compound known to cause nausea and vomiting. It can also cause temporary blindness in pets and humans. Skunk spray is extremely difficult to remove from clothing, skin and hair and can remain for days or weeks at a time. It often enters the ventilation system and will spread throughout a home/building very quickly.

In addition to the horrible smell they emit, skunks can also be destructive to buildings and landscaping. Skunks will dig up lawns and gardens in search of food (insects and grubs). Skunks will burrow dens under structures like porches, decks or sheds and will chew through wood, siding and aluminium.

Skunks have adapted to urban habitats and have become proficient city dwellers. This often brings them into conflict with homeowners as the animals seek food and shelter.

The number of skunks with rabies exceeds that of raccoons and foxes. Distinguishing healthy skunks from those infected with rabies is very difficult, thus, professional removal is always necessary.

The most effective way to get rid of skunks is to ensure all of the skunks are removed before completely sealing off the entire porch, shed or foundation from further entry by digging a trench and installing screening.
